Further to the above, SNC-Lavalin also provided detail design, procurement services, and project management for the Rajahstan Atomic Power Project. In the hydro-power sector, SNC-Lavalin was given the contract to provide detailed design, procurement and construction supervision for Stage III of the Kundah hydroelectric project in Tamil Nadu. It developed a complete field investigation program for the Parbati hydro-electric project in Himachal Pradesh, and provided systems planning studies for a long range, national power development program, including design standards and criteria for 400 kV transmission lines. One of SNC-Lavalin’s major undertakings was to carry out the feasibility study, as well as the engineering, procurement, construction management and commissioning for the Idukki Project in Kerala State and the Chamera Project in Himachal Pradesh. It provided detailed design for the HVDC transmission system between the Rihand Super Thermal Project and New Delhi, as well as back-to-back HVDC interconnection between the Western Region and the Northern Region. SNC-Lavalin was also assigned the study for a pilot project of rural electrification in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

SNC-Lavalin recently completed the design, construction and commissioning of the 300 MW Phase II Chamera Hydro-electric Development in association with a local contractor for National Hydroelectric Power Corporation. In Kerala State, it also provided services for the rehabilitation and modernization of the Pallivasal, Sengulam, and Panniar hydro-power plants and carried out a lump sum contract for the supply of five 50 MW units to the Kuttiyadi Hydroelectric project. SNC-Lavalin has provided technical assistance to various State Electricity Boards for the restructuring of the Power sector. It has also carried out services for the World Bank/CIDA financed power projects in many states, including transmission, substation and distribution works for various areas of several state power networks, plus the 180 MW Lower Peryiar Hydroelectric Project (about 18 km downstream of the 780 MW Idukki project). Services included design review, procurement assistance, construction management, and transfer of technology for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). SNC-Lavalin also carried out system studies, preliminary engineering and tender evaluation on the 500 kV HVDC Chandrapur-Padghe Transmission in Maharashtra.

Through its offices in New Delhi, SNC-Lavalin provides technical assistance and advisory services for the feasibility study of the 1000 MW Karcham-Wangtoo project, a private power development located in the Kinnaur District.

In addition, it is actively involved in the Transportation sector in National Highways upgrading program, currently providing feasibility study, design, construction supervision and contract management services to several projects in the program, such as NH-76, NH-79, NH-6, NH-5, NH-2, Allahabad Bypass.

SNC-Lavalin’s Environment group is working to strengthen the capacity of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to assist the integration of sound environmental and social practices into its business plans. In the Industrial sector, SNC-Lavalin carried out the study for the conversion of the Orissa and Dalmia cement plants from dry to wet process. It was also awarded a study for the evaluation of technical qualifications for the Cement Corporation of India including the areas of project engineering and project management. It carried out geological and feasibility studies for zinc-lead and copper mines, a mine/smelter feasibility study to determine the viability of producing zinc-lead concentrate from the Rampura-Agucha orebody in Rajahstan, and an evaluation for the feasibility study of a greenfield bauxite mine and an alumina refinery in Utkal, Orissa.

The Indo Gulf Fertilizers and Chemicals Corporation Ltd. awarded SNC-Lavalin the supply of license, engineering, procurement and supervision for its new phosphoric acid plant in Dahej, Gujarat. The Canadian firm also provided training and technical assistance for the update of the mine planning for the rock phosphate Rahjasthan State Mines and Minerals operations near Udaipur.

In the Oil and Gas sector, SNC-Lavalin acted as consultant for the procurement of gas pumping equipment for the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), participated in negotiations for a pipeline project in Assam, and provided consultancy services to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) for the modernization of the petroleum refining industry. It also organized programs for the implementation of a training centre for oil engineering and provided training for gas pipeline operation and maintenance. Nirma Limited awarded SNC-Lavalin the contract to perform engineering, project management and technical consultancy services for the construction of a linear alkyl benzene plant in Baroda, Gujarat.

As can be seen, SNC-Lavalin has had a strong presence in India since the 1950s and continues to nurture the relationship.
